Frequently Asked Questions
The High Risk Work licence allows for operating any boom-type EWP with a boom length of 11 metres or more. To operate EWPs under 11m or Scissor lifts (of any height), Vertical mast/personal lifts you must have a valid yellow card licence.
If you are only going to be a passenger in an EWP, you do not need an EWP licence. However, the person operating the EWP must be properly trained and licensed to ensure the safety of all passengers and bystanders.
If a person is to operate a boom-type elevated work platform with a height or reach of 11 metres or more, you must hold a valid National Licence to Perform High Risk Work class WP, issued by a Work Health and Safety Regulator. This licence does not cover a scissor lift or vertical lift.

Yes, operating a truck-mounted boom lift with a boom length under 11 meters will require a Yellow Card and a boom length of 11 metres or more requires a High Risk Work Licence.
The Yellow Card is valid for five years from the date of training; an email will be sent to each individual from EWPA one month prior to the licence expiring inviting them to renew for another five years.
For operators that have kept their practical skills current they have the option to complete their licence renewal online. The online renewal fee is currently $55 and involves a short theoretical refresher and assessment to be undertaken to ensure currency of knowledge.
For operators that have not regularly operated machinery over the last 12 months, face-to-face training through an Accredited Trainer, such as Longreach Access, is a valid (and effective) method of renewing the Yellow Card.
